The pitcher's plate (rubber) in adult slow pitch softball is set at 50' from the point of home plate. An unrestricted flight softball coming off a double-wall or composite bat can exceed 100 mph. At 100 mph, a pitcher standing at 50 feet has less than 1/3 (.333) of a second to react.
